Misfortune Tellers

I was invited to play an interactive role with my humorous origami ‘misfortune tellers’ as part of a mixed discipline exhibition. On opening night, guests were able to pick from a selection of illustrated themes to find their whimsical fate, including fairytale, pirate, horror film, and your death.

A beautiful narrative emerged as I worked with my guests exploring their selected misfortunes. As they asked for several themes, we wove the outcomes together to build a story.

This experience showed me how I can respond to a participant’s interaction with my illustrated objects to provide a more in-depth connection. Even in a ‘light-touch’ way, the range of reactions were enlightening, particularly to the your death theme, which I have seen mirrored elsewhere in conversations about death and is reflective of societal attitudes today.
